Following what was a surprisingly good nights sleep, apart from about 1.30a.m when we were wide awake for an hour, drinking tea and reading books, we set off to see how much exploring we could do. We headed for the Peak tram, a funicular that takes you up the hills for spectacular views all over the territory of Hong Kong. It’s a strange sensation when the skyscrapers that you are passing do not look vertical, but like they are tilting when in fact it is the steep angle of the tram that is causing the problem! This is a popular tourist spot and it was heaving with people, but having done the tourist bit we took a walk further up the hillside to a park, once the governors summer residence. It was beautifully warm. T-shirt weather!! Much fewer people, but a lot of couples in their wedding finery having pictures taken. It was an oasis of calm after the frenzy of the peak.

Having used the tram to get back down we then carried on walking, taking a look at the governors house and walking on through one of many, many shopping centres that are here. People everywhere. Noise, traffic, hustle and bustle!

We have successfully negotiated the MTR which is very easy to use and very cheap. This evening we have met up with the son and wife of friends and sampled some traditional Cantonese food, some of which we would eat again and some we wouldn’t! We came back on the Star Ferry again to enjoy the views of Hong Kong at night. They really are stunning!
